As purveyors of Dippin’ Dots, the best Ice Cream on the planet, it shouldn’t be a shock that we absolutely love National Ice Cream Day. Indulging in our huge selection of flash-frozen ice cream flavors is always amazing. Paying homage to one of the world’s favorite treats on this special day by indulging in some Dippin’ Dots ice cream, however, is truly sublime. Something about the day makes every spoonful special. as though all the emotion, love and respect that ice cream offers floods into a single serving.
But as lovers of data and statistics, we also can’t wait for National Ice Cream Day to roll around because it’s around this time when the International Dairy Foods Association sometimes releases their Ice Cream & Frozen Novelty Trends Survey. It gives us a chance to glimpse into the latest trends of what people love about their ice cream. We’re in luck this year, as a report for 2024 has been released just in time for the celebrations and it provides gallons of detail. Below are some of the numbers from the report that really stuck out.
The Top 5 Flavors
This year we’ve seen a shift in the top 5 flavors amongst the American general public. In 2024, survey respondents reported vanilla as their favorite flavor versus chocolate reported in the 2022 report. Chocolate now stands in second place, and strawberry has moved up the rankings from #4 to number #3. Some of the big winners this year were butter pecan and cookie dough moved into the top 5 at position #4 and #5, respectively. On the losing side, cookies n’ cream and chocolate chip lost their place amongst the top 5.
Irrespective of favorite flavor, the survey results made it absolutely clear that ice cream flavor is the most important consideration when consumers weigh their ice cream options.
The Top 5 Toppings
Meanwhile, in terms of toppings, hot fudge was the clear winner in the survey with 35% of respondents listing it as their favorite topping. Whipped cream came in second at 29% and caramel sauce at third at 24%. Just like in the flavor category, chocolate lost its top spot from 2022, falling to fourth place in the most loved toppings category. Hazelnut spread, honey and cereal topping came in the least loved at 3%.
Where People Like to Eat Ice Cream
When it comes to where people like to eat ice cream, the overwhelming majority of people (63%) indicated they like to eat it at home. That makes us so happy we have so many options of home delivery that can be found on our website here. Eating at an ice cream shop came a distant second at 17%, just ahead of the 15% who enjoyed eating ice cream outdoors. While eating outdoors wasn’t generally popular, 21% of young adults (18-34) are more likely than other groups to say outdoors is their favorite setting.
Everyone Loves Ice Cream
One of our favorite parts of the survey is the general question “how would you describe your feelings toward ice cream in general?”. An incredible 70% of people responded they loved it, another 27% liked it, and only an extremely small minority of 2% mentioned they didn’t like ice cream at all. That sort of love is exactly why ice cream truly deserves its own national day.
