Dippin' Dots Guinness Record

Gold-Level Greatness: How Dippin’ Dots Made Its Own Guinness World Record

With so many sporting world records being broken this summer in Paris, we couldn’t help but reminisce about one of our own. While our’s isn’t sporting related, we are nevertheless proud. The date was July 4th, 2014 – Independence Day day. The location was Downtown Nashville, Tennessee at the annual Let Freedom Sing celebrations. The competition was organized to celebrate the 30th anniversary of National Ice Cream month. Hundreds had flocked to the area to see a headline performance from country music icon Ashley Monroe against the backdrop of clear blue skies on a hot summer day. Witnesses to the event all those years ago, still claim that the setting was perfect for making a world record.

The Team

For the five-person team, which included Dippin’ Dots founder Curt Jones, who were tasked with serving as many cups of Dippin’ Dots ice cream within a three minute window, the summer heat would have been a formidable challenge. Yet they pressed ahead anyway despite the conditions.  At the sound of the start signal, they quickly grabbed the tools and a large supply of Dippin’ Dots strewn across the specially prepared tables, getting to work at light speed preparing cup after cup.

The Challenge

What might have looked easy that day, however, only did so because of lots of training. To succeed the team would need to scoop ice cream beads into individual cups, ensure complete serving consistency, and quickly and accurately cap and package the cup. In the lead-up to the event, the team likely underwent practice sessions to perfect their technique and timing. This would have included drills to increase their speed and coordination, ensuring that they would work together seamlessly during the actual attempt.

The World Record

Well, the hard work paid off. By the end of the three-minute period, the team had successfully prepared 473 cups of Dippin’ Dots exceeding even their own expectations. An official Guinness Book of World Records adjudicator observed the entire achievement live and set the world record for “most ice cream cups prepared by a team in three minutes”. At the time of the win, Curt Jones commented, “Our attempt was a fun and unique way to commemorate the 30 th anniversary of National Ice Cream Month,” Jones said. “We are thrilled that our team successfully completed the challenge. We’d like to thank the talented Ashley Monroe for helping us with our record-setting effort as well as the many Nashville families who came out to cheer us on.”

Ultimately, the world record day wasn’t just gold for Dippin’ Dots but also the local community. As part of the event, Dippin’ Dots donated 400 servings of ice cream to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville.
